Smoke alarms in QLD must be photoelectric, interconnected and installed in every bedroom, connecting hallways and on every storey.
Where do smoke alarms need to be installed in QLD?
Queensland smoke alarm legislation sets out clear placement requirements for all homes. These rules already apply to rental properties and will apply to all owner occupier homes from 1 January 2027. Understanding where smoke alarms need to be installed in QLD is essential to ensuring your home complies.
Smoke alarm placement in Queensland is not optional or flexible. The legislation defines specific locations, and interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms must be installed in each required area.
Smoke alarm requirements in QLD homes
Under current Queensland smoke alarm requirements, alarms must be installed on every storey of a dwelling. This applies whether the home is single level or multi level. In addition to being installed on each storey, smoke alarms must also be placed in specific areas within the home.
The required locations include:
- Inside every bedroom
- In hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling
- If there is no hallway, between the bedroom and other parts of the storey
- On storeys without bedrooms, in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling
Every bedroom in a QLD home must have its own photoelectric smoke alarm installed from 1 January 2027.
This represents one of the most significant changes introduced under Queensland smoke alarm legislation.
Bedroom smoke alarm requirements in QLD
For many older homes in Brisbane and South East Queensland, smoke alarms were historically installed only in hallways. That is no longer sufficient.
Bedroom smoke alarm requirements in QLD now specify that every bedroom must have an individual alarm installed inside the room itself. These alarms must be photoelectric and interconnected with the rest of the system.
Interconnection ensures that if a fire starts in one bedroom, alarms throughout the home will activate simultaneously.
Standalone smoke alarms in hallways do not meet current QLD smoke alarm requirements if bedrooms do not have individual alarms.
Smoke alarm placement on multiple storeys
Smoke alarm placement in QLD must account for every storey of the home. Even if a level does not contain bedrooms, at least one smoke alarm must be installed on that level.
In homes without a hallway connecting bedrooms, the alarm must be installed between the bedroom and the rest of the storey. This ensures the alarm is positioned along the likely path of escape. These placement rules apply regardless of the size or age of the property.
Interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in QLD
It is not enough for smoke alarms to simply be installed in the correct locations. Queensland smoke alarm requirements also specify that alarms must be interconnected. This means when one alarm detects smoke, all alarms in the dwelling must activate together.
Photoelectric smoke alarms are required under Queensland legislation because they detect visible particles of combustion and respond effectively to smouldering fires.
All required smoke alarms in a Queensland home must be photoelectric and interconnected.
If alarms are installed in the correct locations but are not interconnected, the system does not comply with owner occupier smoke alarm requirements from 1 January 2027.
What this means for Queensland homeowners
If your home was built before the 2016 legislative reforms and has not been upgraded since, it may not meet current smoke alarm placement QLD standards.
Common gaps include:
- Bedrooms without individual smoke alarms
- Alarms that are not interconnected
- Older non photoelectric units
- Missing alarms on lower or upper storeys
Understanding where smoke alarms need to be installed in QLD is the first step. Confirming that your home meets these requirements ensures compliance with Queensland smoke alarm legislation before the 2027 deadline.
